Okay, both Nick Demiris and Rohan D'Souza have now written to me saying that they have never before seen this email, purportedly by Nick's hand, and they conclude it is a hoax.
In Rohan's email, he provided a couple of clarifications about MUSU's oversight of Farrago's content:
I have never and plan to never ever get involved in the actual content of Farrago. The editors were elected to be editors - not myself. In fact, I have never seen an edition of Farrago prior to it being printed and on the stands available to all students.
...
Firstly, Nick Demiris has no authority to write to Farrago and inform them of their budget requirements / problems / anything. Apart from the liquidator, that is my job, and I have not delegated my duties at all. Further, I would never censor political debate by withholding money.

On the subject of Farrago 2, I’d like to know why the queer officer’s report had a full page critical response to it published in the same edition. How can someone send a letter to Farrago complaining about an officer’s report before the thing has even been printed?
student
There has been a lot of grumbling from the queer students about how the queer officer’s have (not) been doing their jobs. I didn’t get the feeling that it was complaining about the report, since it was known before hand that they’re really ignoring queer issues.

Why do you think that the Liberal/Unity guys gave the queer officer position to the trots on a silver platter??
They knew that Left-Focus only wanted the position, so that they could use MUSU resources for their socialist campaigns, rather than organise queer department events.
This way, they have political ammunition against them, come the next election, and they still keep the ALS guys out of the office.

It’s probably more accurate to say that the Liberal/Unity guys didn’t run for the Queer Office because they didn’t want anything to do with queer students. The way they talk about them would contravene sexual vilification laws, not to mention how they allegedly treat the queer officers in office bearer meetings.

Who ARE these Liberal/Unity guys? I’ve never met one.
Admittedly, I’ve been too busy having a life to pay that much attention recently, but last I saw mawson knifed scotty and now the whole right’s trying to kill each other. There they go; it was funny while they lasted.
There are libs, and there’s unity - I suppose there’s also Nick, but he’s more of a Liberal/Unity/Socialist/chardy/dem who noone really wants much to do with these days.
Fin
No, they didn’t run for the queer officer position, but because of Universal Voting, they could effectively say who they wanted to get elected through the preferential system - they can allocate preferences to positions that they are not running for, and their first preference effectively becomes their candidate (how did you think Scott Crawford got elected, eh?)
But yes, I imagine that the Liberal/Unity alliance was never really going to last… one side was inevitably going to stab the other in the back sooner or later.
Oh, and you forget that Mr D was also once involved with ALS… *smirk*
A.W.
Dick Nemisis was never a member of ALS or even involved. He ran with the ALP Club ticket in 2002 after the Democrats were thrown out of the election.
Fin
Okay, I stand corrected… it’s an easy enough mistake to make. :-P
anon
There are Democrats in Melbourne Uni???
Fin
There was a Democrats Club started up by Peter Eckersley back in about ‘98 or ‘99, and they got a few people in some of the committees… back in the days when being a Democrat was the trendy thing to do.
From what I recall, though, they were mostly roleplayers - the kind you’d find on the 2nd floor lounge area of Union House… scary, huh?
AW
It’s entirely true. Most of the Democrats in 1999-2002 were roleplayers from the Mary Cook Lounge. That’s because IMO, roleplayers are moral enough to not be interested in “Liberal” politics, but not educated enough to realise that the Democrats are neither relevent nor effective in being a Caesarist, third-option.
